AMICIZIA TERAPIA

Quanto fa bene l'amicizia alla salute mentale? Tantissimo.

FRIENDSHIP THERAPY

How good is friendship for mental health? Very good. When a friendship is true, it is also important for the emotions, friendship usually powers positive emotions, and supports negativity and consoles friends that are suffering. Friendship is comforting and encouraging. Friendship is a living presence, it is considered important for the emotions and thus for health of mind.

Without friendship and love, life would be really boring (from: Schopenhauer).

But the story I want to tell, of Kauko Räsänen and me, is recent. Both sick now; for many years we had not seen each other. Knowing that he was not well, I was determined to visit him. And so I did. This summer. My wife encouraged me to do so knowing that I wanted it so much.A friend is a friend, a true friend is like a brother.Kauko Räsänen is the contemporary sculptor and artist I most admire, I admire him as an artist and as a person endowed with great artistic talent but, more importantly for me, a great sense of humanity.
He was born in Suistamo, Karelia, Finland on 23.2.1926 and, like all true artists, can not be considered an artist of one place (in this case Finland and Karelia) but of' humanity.
The true masters, in my opinion, are as brilliant as humble, honest as the good hearted.
This is why they succeed in art. They are able to combine two values that in theory are opposites: rigor and freedom. And that makes them unique and important, they have succeeded in their work in fusing together these two virtues which instead of repelling are complementary.
His sculptures, mainly figurative, reach the artistic objective as individual and personal.
Woman respected now as a mother and now as a creature (rightly sensual). The classic blends with the success of his experimental decomposable medals: medals composed of several parts, that can be taken apart, so that they change, in metaphorical terms, no longer just two more faces.
Especially he loves to work (but not only) in bronze, surprising medals and modular sculptures in round; small, medium and large formats.
This summer, after about twenty-five years, maybe longer, I went to find him and hardly anything has changed. The happiness of two old friends who see each other again after so many years has been mutual.
Artists thus belong to us, as brothers and sisters of life and should be considered and defended, and they belong as a family of any nation, color and culture, a global family not belligerent, but of peace and respect and then to love, help and respect, a family that loves each other and also cares for all the other creatures. They defend us and consider us. What neither the politicians nor prelates nor economists or the film directors or other VIPs do. For them we are just numbers. None of them would open the door and take in to his home as a brother and respect as a brother, a poor man, a stranger.
Kauko Räsänen has done this for me and I was just a young drifter, passing along the paths and the dark colors of the rainbow of life.
